If you’re still wondering why you should have social media share buttons on your site – let me tell you it’s a MUST!
Why you need social media share buttons?
Simply put, if your content gets shared, chances are you will get free traffic. Nice huh? Plus the bonus – Google will rank higher pages with more shares. The more shares your content gets, the more important and valuable Google will see it. So why not make it dead simple for your readers to find the buttons?
Which social share buttons?
Well, you definitely need a Facebook Like, Twitter Tweet and Google , those 3 are the main ones but also do not forget Pinterest to easily share your images and videos.
Adding share buttons to WordPress
If your site is built on WordPress – lucky you! There are few really good little plugins that will make the whole process a matter of few clicks of a mouse. All you need to do is login to your self-hosted WordPress backend and go to Plugins. But first decide which plugin you want to use – have a look below to the ones I personally recommend and make your choice based on how it will look on the page and functionality.
My favourite Best Social Media sharing plugins for WordPress
#1 – Social Warfare:
My Favourite! Mainly because it will let you add and set up an image for shares on Pinterest (great source of traffic) it comes with click to tweet add-on so you don’t need another plugin, big advantage.
It’s fully customizable. You can set button colours to match your branding, add floating bar and set its position. You can also connect it to you ‘bit.ly’ and Google analytics accounts to get the insights of the shares.
#2 – Flare:
This is one of the most popular social sharing WordPress plugins. You can see it on many sites as the floating bar is typically on the left hand side. It used to be an easy to install plugin but a the developer decided to make it an app and things got a little bit more complicated. You will still need to install Flare plugin but then you need to go to Filament site to get your free account and set up how you want your Flare to look like.
The good thing is that you can use Flare even if your site is not built on WordPress but that will require adding a bunch of code to that part of your site.
#3 – Jetpack:
This plugin will usually be installed on each WordPress site. It’s supposed to make it easier for self-hosted WP users to use all the features the WordPress.com offers. One of the features is adding social share buttons. f you would like to learn how to use it have a look here.
#4 – Simple Share Buttons Adder:
As the name says, it lets you add share buttons easily to your WordPress pages and posts. You can even create your own share buttons to match your site style and colours with this plugin by going to make.simplesharebuttons.com
#5 – Social Toolbar:
This plugin will add a nice looking responsive toolbar (will adapt to screen size) at the top or bottom of your pages with the share buttons of your choice and chosen colour to fit your website styling. If you choose to go for the pro version you can add social feeds displaying your profiles updates.
Not a favourite of mine but worth to mention:
– Digg Digg – this very popular plugin will add a simple floating share bar, something like Flare.
NEXT – Prepare your pages for sharing for better conversions
No matter which plugin you decide to go for, the most important is to make sure it shares your content in the way it attracts new visitors to your site. It is worth it to have a look at the free plugins like Social SEO Booster or WordPress Social Sharing Optimization that will add Facebook Open Graph, Twitter Card and Google Rich Snippets to boost your sites search engine visibility. It will let you set an image, title and description for each page or post which will be pulled when your content is shared on Facebook, Twitter or Google.
If you use any of the other plugins to add share buttons to your site, let me know in comments. Would love to hear your suggestions and feedbacks.
